Jeffrey Silverstein’s music has long explored the outer reaches of Americana, with the Portland-based songwriter’s compositions often relying on psychedelic flourishes or ambient minimalism to his set his twanging guitar apart from those of his alt-country and roots-rock peers. With Doggone, his upcoming third album and debut for the Full Time Hobby label, Silverstein continues his cosmic voyage with new experimentations; the latest single from the bunch, “Patchouli,” features plenty of hallmarks of his work (a hazy pedal steel enters the picture a few minutes into the track’s instrumental groove), though it also sees him drifting into the gently propulsive world of krautrock. Also, there’s a bit of wailing sax embedded into the mix as the song winds down.
“‘Patchouli’ is our version of a ‘kraut-country’ song,” Silverstein shares of his vision for the mid-album cut. “I drew a lot of inspiration from Bobby Lee, who I just got off the road with and have had the privilege of touring with a handful of times over the past few years. This was the first time I experimented with the CGCGCD tuning. It’s a super satisfying riff to play and felt like we all locked in quickly on this one. Was hyped to have my bud Blu Miles add some saxophone on this one as well.”
