In case you missed it, Fielded returned last month with her follow-up to May 2025’s jazzy Chuckle Deluxe LP. Some Kind of Animal explores a wide variety of sounds across its 12 tracks ranging from psychedelic art-pop to alternative R&B, with a guest verse from Pink Siifu helping to incorporate elements of hip-hop into the proceedings (you may recall several Armand Hammer songs that have benefitted from Fielded’s soulful vocals over the years). Yet the distinct through line for the LP was its attack on the patriarchy, both on a personal and a political level. The mid-album cut “Pigpen,” for example, invokes the Peanuts figure to clap back at the type of male insecurity that leads to childish name-calling.
“Dishes in the sink are nothing compared to the spiritual mess that is a man who is deeply insecure and projecting self-criticisms onto the femme(s) in his life,” Fielded shares. “‘Pigpen’ is so specific in its commentary on a particular hetero romantic relationship, but it can also be related to where we are in the state of the world regarding fragile masculinity. A strong, powerful femme appears dirty, messy to these men; but what is/are she/they actually wearing? A projection of the patriarchal blame that stems from a lack of core identity and emotional fortitude that exists within the male who beholds the ‘wearer.’”
“Pigpen” also inspired the latest visual accompaniment to the album, which was created by MyFi Studio. The mesmerizing video features surreally distorted scenes of Fielded sitting out in a green space—scenes of her fielded?—intercut with shots of her playing fetch in a pond with her insatiable dog—which, sure, is some kind of animal.
