Morgane Lhote may have first appeared on your radar when she joined Stereolab in 1995, contributing keys to the London neo-psych band’s iconic run from Emperor Tomato Ketchup to 2001’s Sound-Dust. From there, she helped to establish the UK post-punk revivalists The Projects in the early 2000s before launching her own project the following decade, Hologram Teen. It’s with this synthy endeavor that she’s released four upbeat records up through last summer’s Captain Fluo, a more disco-tinged variant on Stereolab’s blend of krautrock and vibrant art-pop.
Now, the songs on Captain Fluo are being revisited on the forthcoming remix album Pyramid Disko (Captain Fluo Night Versions), with Julia Holter, YACHT, and µ-Ziq among the artists reworking nine of the LP’s 11 tracks. Today she’s sharing the first taste of the project, trip-hop pioneers Morcheeba’s funky reinterpretation of “Connection Transpacifique,” with the group’s Ross Godfrey sharing that their friendship dates back to Lhote’s Stereolab days. “She was always the coolest person to know and turned me on to so much music,” he says. “We used to go to gigs together all the time and listen to records at her old flat in Camden, London, so it was a real pleasure to get a message from Los Angeles asking to do a remix for her Hologram Teen project.”
Regarding Morcheeba’s alternation of the tune, he adds: “It was fun making a beat-fuelled version with original vocals through a Vocoder. Morcheeba are famous for doing songs about the sea and so this felt like a natural fit. Skye [Edwards] sang the vocals on the drop down and I played a bunch of old analog synthesizers. To me the remix feels contemporary but with a heavy influence from early electronica and trip-hop.”
