Barely a year removed from the release of his Nights and Weekends LP, James Bookert is returning to his dreamy synthpop solo project San Gabriel with this Friday’s release of the five-track Adult Onset Goth EP. Like the album that landed before it, Bookert treats each of these songs as its own chillwave-revival playground as he explores themes culled from his personal life that often feel heavy enough to sink such weightless instrumentals.
Before the EP drops later this week, San Gabriel is sharing one last teaser in the form of its opening track, “All My Time.” Its woozy blend of nu-funk and homage to the era of Causers of This set the scene for the project, while its lyrics fittingly depict Bookert soaring far above his worldly concerns. “I wrote this song about the curiosity within a relationship growing,” he explains. “It’s looking at a relationship from 30,000 feet above, remembering pivotal, seemingly ordinary moments that later define a relationship. All my time is a reflection on growth and letting go.”
Preview the track below, and pre-order Adult Onset Goth here. Per his label Share It Music’s mission, a portion of proceeds from the release will benefit the nonprofit Health Alliance for Austin Musicians (or HAAM), which sets working musicians in the Texas capital up with affordable healthcare.
