Given their evident preference for Mazzy Star over Cocteau Twins, Estonia’s Holy Motors have been at the forefront of both the dream-pop and alt-country revivals for a decade now, with early singles like “Sleeprydr” and “Heavenly Creatures” laying the groundwork for their first two albums of Western-sunset shoegaze. They’ll return next month with a third, Heaven’s Night, which continues to see them mine the saloon-band aesthetic for their hushed balladry soaked in guitar reverb and accented with brushed snare.
Keeping with the album title’s religious imagery, the third single they’re sharing from the lot is called “God Is a Feeling.” Over the course of six minutes, the band ambles through dreamy guitar-led soundscapes as vocalist Eliann Tulve sorts through a relationship that’s fallen into disarray. “God Is a Feeling’ addresses manipulating a true love at a time when you’re not good with yourself,” Tulve shares. “It’s about hurt, and more than just your own. Gotta talk to god, and god is a feeling.”
