When we last caught up with Tegan and Sara in 2022, they were juggling a lot: a new album and a new TV show based on their 2019 memoir, most significantly. It was by many accounts their year, and it’s hardly surprising that they’ve remained out of the limelight since then as they quietly regroup (well, not exactly: they published a pair of graphic novels, suffered the misfortune of becaming catfishing avatars, and celebrated some milestones). Though by the sounds of their new single, 2027 will be another busy time for them: Today’s release of the single “Our Year” paints an upbeat picture for what they have in store between the synthy tune’s upbeat sound and the news it arrives alongside that the Quin sisters will be touring with Hilary Duff next fall.
Regarding the single, “Our Year” sees Tegan and Sara re-teaming with producer Felix Cartal after 2024’s techno experiment “Right on Time.” It also features guest vocals from fellow Canadian songwriter Lights, who shares that the collaboration was something of a dream come true. “This feels like one of those milestone creative experiences you’d be proud to leave behind,” the artist shared in a press statement. “I’ve looked up to Tegan and Sara for years, both for their music and what they stand for.”
For their part, the Quins credit Lights’ involvement as the key moment when the song came together. “At this stage in our career, we want everything we release to feel grounded and purposeful, but also fun,” Tegan said. “Community has always been at the heart of what we do, so bringing in other artists to build this track together was an incredible experience.”
