American Football were tabbed with cooking up their first-ever SiriusXMU Session, and they did not disappoint. The Midwest-emo icons performed an acoustic version of The Cure’s “Boys Don’t Cry,” in addition to three of their own songs from their last two albums.
Regarding the choice of cover, the band’s Mike Kinsella said: “The Cure, and specifically ‘Boys Don’t Cry,’ has not only been fundamental to my growth as a songwriter but as much or more so on my development as a man. It just seemed like the perfect fit for a bunch of melodically-driven, emotionally available grown men to deconstruct and try to make our own. We replaced the jangle with some spindly guitars, slowed it down quite a bit, and added a mournful trumpet solo, but the plain-spoken adolescent longing remains as resonant as ever.”
Check out the band’s version of The Cure classic below. The full set list—additionally including performances of “Wake Her Up,” “No Feeling,” and “Uncomfortably Numb”—drops tonight at 6 p.m. PT.
