Last month marked the 15-year anniversary of the end of Carissa’s Wierd, one of the architects of the late-’90s/early-’00s slowcore movement. While co-founder Jenn Champion kept busy as a solo artist since then (and the band’s drummer throughout the span of their brief record-releasing career has done quite well for himself as a frontman), it was a bit of a surprise when she reconnected with bandmate Mat Brooke last month to mark the anniversary of the project’s last single—2011’s “Tucson”—with brand new material that would also precede the first new Carissa’s Wierd album since 2002’s Songs About Leaving.
As we anticipate the January 8 release of Somewhere Further Than Far Away, the band is returning today with the LP’s second single, “I Don’t Feel Like I Feel Right,” and a music video that pulls together tour footage from the group’s original run. Like the clip, the melancholy tune feels like a time capsule of the era of Sierra Mist, Jason Molina, and ending a West Coast tour with your finances still in the black. “Mat and I have lived a lot of lives together,” Champion shares of the single. “This is kind of a reckoning with our past and present. And how a relationship can feel fated to be no matter what happens along the way.”
