Now that it’s October, it means the summer is well and truly over. And for Cleveland punks Heart & Lung, the advance of the fall means that they should feel a little happier—at least that’s what their new single “I Hate the Sun” would suggest. The first track taken from the four-piece’s forthcoming EP—somewhat ironically titled Shut Up About the Sun—is a jaunty slice of self-described “upbeat rustbelt punk” that sticks in your ears from the moment you hit “play” the way the Lake Erie sand sticks in, well, you know.

Hailed by their label, Red Scare, as “the fourth best thing to come outta Cleveland after Bernie Kosar, Bone Thugs, and that place that sells $28 grilled cheese sandwiches,” Heart & Lung are also sharing a video for the cut today, which was animated by vocalist/guitarist Shannon Sullivan. “‘I Hate the Sun’ addresses our first complaint—the sun is way too hot,” Sullivan explains. “Heat has been the primary migraine trigger for me my whole whole life.”

As for the full EP, which drops this Friday via the Chicago punk stalwarts, the band adds: “Now that we’ve gotten summer out of the way, we’re releasing Shut Up About the Sun to complain and also celebrate the season. These songs address our love/hate relationship with the most problematic star in the solar system: the sun.”
