Out today via Nettwerk, Fenne Lily’s fourth album Win Win is something of a post-breakup comfort listen as the Brooklyn-via-Dorset songwriter looks toward the road ahead. As we noted in our review, it’s the album opener “Uh Huh” which sets the scene for everything that follows: a warn-out reflection on romance that would feel shrugged off if you couldn’t hear the broad range of emotions being sorted out in Lily’s vocals.
It’s this song that she chose to perform for a recent “Neighborhoods” session, which she filmed in the garden behind the Brooklyn studio in which Win Win was recorded. Set up as a trio with acoustic guitar and banjo, she performs the album’s contemplative opening number as the sun shines down on her. “It follows the end of one love and the start of another, when you meet someone new but the residual pain from the time before is holding you back,” she explains of the track. “Every breakup has felt like it’ll hurt forever, but it’s always led me to something different, often better, never nothing.”
