Kuroma

This won’t surprise you if you’ve already hit play on the Soundcloud embed below, but Kuroma have opened for Ex Hex and Tame Impala. And while the band’s Athens, GA, origins place them far from Boston and (certainly) farther from Australia, it’s difficult to think of two bands whose very different sounds could triangulate to sound more like these guys.

The 20+ Centuries EP, which we’re proud to be premiering today, follows the candy-coated Kuromarama, which was released this spring, and it finds the quartet diving deep into homemade psychedelia that sounds like it was recorded on homemade psychedelics. With its wooshing channel surfs, “Gonna Get Cool” suggests T. Rex working out a whippet-driven dream, while the opening title track—a two-and-a-half-minute jagged gem—cruises by with so much confidence you’d swear it was a just-discovered lost classic. That track pops up again on the EP’s back end, reworked and fogged down until it sounds like Ween getting back together to re-record Quebec in a fresh cloud of Aquanet. It’s a powerful, compact set that manages to tie all of this—and a cover of The Breeders’s “Divine Hammer”—together in a unity of mood. You can give it a listen below.
