Nobody starts off their day quite like Pee-wee Herman, which is why it was a most welcome development this morning when we were invited back into his ridiculous home for an announcement: Pee-wee’s Big Holiday, one of our most anticipated films of the year, will premiere March 17 at SXSW (soon after the premiere of Richard Linklater’s Everybody Wants Some), and will be out unto the world on March 18 via Netflix.
Pee-wee’s (Paul Reubens) return to film, which has been in the works for some time, was produced by Judd Apatow and cowritten by Paul Rust, who both have a separate project also coming soon to Netflix—a show called Love. That series will launch next month, and will lead into the big reveal of what in the hell a twenty-first century Pee-wee movie actually looks like (the last time we saw the gray-suited rebel in feature form was 1988).
Below, return to Pee-wee’s new playhouse of sorts for the teaser video.
