The Light Between Oceans is one of our most anticipated films of 2016, but it just as well could’ve been one of our most anticipated of 2015—considering that it was made several years ago. It appears that the delay in this project getting seen has had to do with a dissolving distribution contract between Disney and Touchstone, and with that resolved (in one way or another), the drama finally has a release date: September 2.

That’ll be just in time for Oscar season next year, which probably isn’t a coincidence given that, since production began on this movie, both of its leads—Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander—have gone on to be nominated for Academy Awards (and are maybe something of an item these days as well).

Based on M. L. Stedman’s 2012 debut novel of the same name, the film—directed by Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine, The Place Beyond the Pines)—is about a child who washes ashore, into an Australian couple’s lives, and the subsequent question of who he belongs to when what appears to be the real mother (Rachel Weisz) reenters the picture.

You can watch a trailer for the guaranteed-to-be devastating experience below.

The Light Between Oceans is out September 2.
