Despite the increasing difficulties of shooting a legitimate period piece in Los Angeles, there have been a few great ones in the last few years—notably, Hail, Caesar! and Inherent Vice. Encouraging projects, to be sure, which is why we’re really looking forward to The Nice Guys, one of our most anticipated films of the year.

The movie was directed and cowritten by Shane Black—the writer of the first three Lethal Weapon movies—who made his directorial debut with Kiss Kiss Bang Bang in 2005, and then proceeded to destroy that credibility by directing Iron Man 3. At this point, though, the quality of those Marvel movies can hardly be accredited to the director anymore, so we’re optimistic about The Nice Guys, which stars Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling as a bumbling detective and private eye, respectively, who have absolutely no idea what they’re doing in an increasingly violent investigation involving Kim Basinger (basically picking up where her character could have gone after L.A. Confidential) and her daughter.

You can watch the new trailer below.
