Let’s not beat around the bush here. It’s Friday, it’s summer, and we desperately need to dance. Generally speaking, when you have to get down, New Orleans is the place you want to be. There’s arguably no other city in the United States so devoted to funk in its various forms: the bash-away heaviness of Galactic, the smooth breeziness of Kermit Ruffins, the frenetic machine-gun wobble of Big Freedia.
Enter Sexy Dex and The Fresh, a cottonmouthed collective making lo-fi funk that likely feels more at home among the shotgun shacks and warehouses of the Bywater than among the stately manses lining St. Charles Avenue. Today, because we need it, we’re thrilled to be premiering the video for the group’s single “Speed Racer.” A whip-snap cut of hard-nosed funk reminiscent of Dirty Mind–era Prince, the song is driven by Dexter Gillmore’s giddy falsetto and panting synths. It’s a little delicate, a little heavy, and totally thrilling, and it’ll make you feel like you’re sprinting on tip-toes.
Do a few stretches and check it out below, then rest up before Sexy Dex hits your town on a brief eastern jaunt; those dates are beneath the video.
