The Swedish-Canadian band Thus Owls have a way of creating visuals in listener’s minds with the ethereal vocals of Erika Angell and the sonic textures from her husband, Simon, and the rest of the band. It’s only fitting that they would find a director like Mylène Simard to interpret their track “Ropes” in a way that captured the haunting mysticism the melody and lyrics evoke in a video. The result is a weird and abstract representation filled with psychedelic colors and hypnotic layers that is best watched to get the full effects.
In the case that you have no idea what is going on, the band explains that “the video for ‘Ropes’ is a furry, colorful and abstract love story. To find a breathing balance between two constantly changing individuals is a life long adventure and in this art piece Mylène Simard gives visual life to the song. With beautifully layered images, both peaceful and sometimes explosive, she creates a surreal and adventurous world that extends our imagination.”
“Simon and Erika are incredible collaborators, always willing to endure all forms of torture and discomfort in the name of weird video art,” says director Mylène Simard. “We wanted to tell a story through the video that was fantastical and murky, about creatures or monsters forced to separate in some sort of magical forest, set off on their own path, reluctantly and painfully. We wanted to make a beautiful fairy-tale video, with elements of horror and psychedelia. The final result is strange and dream-like, and I hope viewers come out of watching it with their own interpretation.”
