Over the course of their brief six years together, Memphis punks Ex-Cult have already amassed an impressive resume of releases under the nation’s top garage-centric labels, including Castle Face, Goner, Famous Class, and, most recently, In The Red—a well-deserved distinction for a band that blends the punk spirit of Jay Reatard with the ferocious riffs of Destruction Unit so effortlessly. With the additional lapses into Segallian scuzz qualifying leadman Chris Shaw for a spot in Ty’s recent GØGGS project, Ex-Cult knows how to keep their listeners on their feet.

Slabbing it up last fall while at Pickathon, the Reformed Cultists tore through their 2015 single “Stick the Knife In” with an expected hostility toward, well, who- or whatever they stuck the knife in. Brought to life by hints of surf rock and Shaw’s classic-punk accent (not to mention his deep-cut punk tee), the band sounds more than ready to conquer any Drag City or Burger Records-affiliated plans they have for the imminent future.

As always, this episode of the Slab Sessions was produced by the excellent folks at Half Stop Sessions.
