2014. “Togetherness” trailer on HBO

Though HBO might not seem like the most natural landing place for the hyper-realistic, low-budget mumblecore genre, with past films like Cyrus and Jeff, Who Lives at Home, writer/director/brother duo Jay and Mark Duplass have been the closest thing that the scene has to crossover stars (unless you count Noah Baumbach, that is).

Their new show Togetherness, which stars Amanda Peet, Steve Zissis, Melanie Lynskey, and Mark Duplass himself, follows the developments of an upturned family as it accommodates two unlikely (and desperate) additions to the household. The first season promises eight episodes of post-holiday season dysfunction that will make you feel better about your weird family. And judging from the trailer, it looks like there’ll be plenty of catharses to go around.
