Ok, so (again) maybe the fourth time isn’t generally the charm for storied film franchises. They tend to be over-produced, under-developed, and have the vibe of simply too much baggage. But if you’ve seen the ridiculous drag show dystopia that is Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, you know that George Miller’s saga of Max Rockatansky isn’t exactly a typical franchise, either.
For Mad Max: Fury Road, Miller is once again back at the helm, this being his first non–Happy Feet directorial project since 1998 (which was…Babe: Pig in the City). Basically, it’s been a while. So long, in fact, that as you may have noticed, Tom Hardy has replaced Mel Gibson as the titular Max, and the production is miles away from the notoriously low-budget affair of the original in 1979.
Joining Hardy in the apocalyptic thrill-ride is Charlize Theron, a super-creepy-looking Nicholas Hoult, and Zoë Kravitz (yes, Lenny’s daughter). You can see how that all stacks up the trailer below, along with some screencap highlights.
Say hello to your new Max.
Who is apparently also still Bane.
Charlize Theron is there to help blow stuff up.
Probably not with any help from Nicholas Hoult. (Chapstick, dude, come on.)
Or this dude.
And yes, that guy in the corner is playing bass.
Mad Max: Fury Road is in theaters May 15, 2015.
