Shaun of the Dead director Edgar Wright discovered that zombies were funny fifteen years ago; now it’s dry-humored indie filmmaker Jim Jarmusch’s turn to make his official zombie debut with The Dead Don’t Die.
Jarmusch’s movies are typically coffee-blackened, nicotine-stained sagas of slackers and schlubs (see: Stranger Than Paradise, Dead Man, Down By Law, Paterson) and this one appears to be no different. In the wacky trailer, you’ll see Adam Driver and Bill Murray as small-town cops investigating a series of grisly murders (“ghouls!” Driver pontificates sternly, upon being asked what kind of creatures could be responsible for the mayhem); Tilda Swinton as a funeral cosmetologist putting bright makeup on dead bodies and then chopping them up with samurai swords when they come back to life; Selena Gomez as a sassy young normie afraid for her life (that casting is taking a page directly out of Harmony Korine’s book); and Iggy Pop as a zombie who craves coffee, because that’s the thing he loved most in life (frankly, Iggy could eat my flesh and chase it down with a latte any day).
The Dead Don’t Die cast also includes Chloë Sevigny, Steve Buscemi, Danny Glover, RZA, and Tom Waits. The film is out via Focus Features on June 14, 2019.
