Australia’s Crooked Colours was working on the band’s third studio effort when singer Philip Slabber had something of a revelation.
“This one was one of those tracks that worked from the start, and grew into something very special,” Slabber said of “Never Dance Alone,” the third track from the forthcoming full-length, Langata. It features a minimal arrangement, low, rumbling bass tones, and additional vocals from New Zealand’s Pip Brown, better known as Ladyhawke. Her contribution brings an entirely new dimension to Crooked Colour’s indie dance aesthetic, not unlike the dynamic found in music by The xx.
“I was initially singing both parts in different registers, and then we came up with the idea to turn it into a call and response track,” continued Slabber. “Ladyhawke was available and her voice worked perfectly. This is the only feature off our upcoming album, and we couldn’t be happier to have Pip on the record.” Listen to “Never Dance Alone” below.
Crooked Colours will support Langata on an extensive tour of North America this year, with a slew of U.S. festivals on the docket alongside headlining dates. The band will hit the stage at Bonnaroo, Firefly, Life Is Beautiful, and the cannabis-friendly Northern Lights. See the full tour itinerary here.
Langata is set for release on May 17 via Sweat It Out, with pre-orders available now.
