It’s been exactly a month since the release of Florida Man’s sophomore LP, Tropical Depression, but that good FM Content keeps coming. Today the noise rock quartet are sharing a video for the fiery number “Holy Roller,” an afterthought-turned-album-centerpiece brimming with heavy riffs and heady vocals. “When we first started writing the album, this one was always just kind of on the back burner as a ‘maybe’ for a long time because we weren’t sure how that grooved-out vibe would mesh with the rest of the songs,” guitarist Andrew Barnes explains. “I’m glad we saw it all the way through because it ended up being one of our favorites, and set the tone for how we wanted to approach some of the remaining songs.”
The video, like most of Tropical Depression, is entirely over-the-top, with the band shredding in the type of church you only see on community access television. “We didn’t necessarily want it to be dramatic and heavy-handed with sinister commentary on Christianity, like a Behemoth video or whatever,” Barnes clarifies. “Instead I think we just wanted to make light of the over the top pageantry that goes along with any cult-y infrastructure like that. All shot through the lens of a local public access TV program you’d stumble upon at three a.m. and be too stoned and fascinated to turn the channel. Maybe like if Tim and Eric remade the video for Rollins Band’s ‘Liar’?”
Tropical Depression is out now on Spartan Records. You can purchase it here, or stream it here.
