Over the course of just two albums, Charlie Martin and Will Taylor have established themselves as a dependable pair for penning intimate, bedroom-confined slowcore. But with the reveal of Hovvdy’s third record, Heavy Lifter, comes news of their recent foray into pop, even citing hip-hop as an influence on the new LP.
Gutting recently demised labelmates LVL UP of their lo-fi bummer-pop charm, lead single “Cathedral” is an upbeat—though nearly whispered—acoustic ballad sped up to accomodate a drum beat familiar to any Dave Benton project. Powered by longing, the three minute single is cozy as anything else the band has released, though not nearly as lethargic.
