A sophomore album is always a defining moment in the life of a band. Your pent-up debut energy is gone and you (probably) have more music industry experience by round two. For Los Angeles’s White Arrows, their second album seems to be one of sonic transition. After the extensive touring that followed 2012’s Dry Land Is Not A Myth, the quintet seems to have grounded themselves and matured in their sound. With a new state of mind comes the appropriately titled new album In Bardo (bardo means “the intermediate or astral state of the soul after death and before rebirth”). The first single, “I Want A Taste,” already offers a glimpse into their more developed sound. The cluttered psychedelic chimes of their previous effort are replaced by a more intricate layering of guitar fuzz, drum machines, and the unmistakable quivering vocals of Mickey Church. The result is chilling and immersive, bringing the song’s title to life as you beg for a taste for more.

In Bardo is set to be released in September on Votiv. You can also catch the band on tour this summer, make sure to check out all the dates below.
