Before harmonizing with Geroge Clarke on the latest Deafheaven record, Chelsea Wolfe was singing songs together with Satanic folkster King Dude. In spite of the doom metal and darkwave of recent releases, Wolfe’s latest LP continues to reveal itself as a return to these collabs with her new single “Deranged for Rock & Roll” being the most explicit homage to gothic country yet, delving into the same underworld as Wovenhand or Handsome Family.

In the video for what Wolfe describes as her “love song to music,” director Gilbert Trejo illustrates the artist’s passion for raw, visceral songwriting with a cinematic vision of a Southwestern town being lulled by Wolfe’s song. “My character is destined to sing the same song over and over in this purgatory of a desert bar,” Wolfe interprets, “while different people come through the town and begin to feel the pull as well, drawing them into this vortex to stay for good.”

Birth of Violence drops September 13 via Sargent House. You can pre-order it here—and make sure to catch Wolfe on her acoustic tour this fall at the dates below.
