Hayley Mary, frontwoman of The Jezabels, has collaborated with Johnny Took of the DMA’s to release her solo debut single. Hayley wanted her new music to sound like “a memory of your parents dancing in the kitchen, but your parents are Cyndi Lauper and Roy Orbison.” Sounds like the dream family.
Produced by Scott Horscroft, the track was written when Hayley lived above a pub in Sydney, and the accompanying video, shot by Mclean Stephenson, is intended as an ode to the city. Of moving away from Sydney to Melbourne and Edinburgh, Hayley admits, “It was not the pretty Harbour Bridge or the Opera House, but the normal life things I missed, like the pub or the footy field or a pie shop.”
The video for “The Piss, the Perfume” honors that nostalgia, with Hayley hangin’ in pubs and dancing down non-tourist trap streets to the classic rock homage. “I find bitterness through love and I find, through bitterness, true love,” Hayley sings on the chorus, with equal parts irony and sincerity. Watch it below.
