Gather ’round Sandmen and -women! As Adam Sandler puts his suits away (the Academy robbed him of a Best Actor Oscar nom for Uncut Gems), LA is anticipating the actor’s threatened “bad-on-purpose” follow-up to Gems with a table reading of writer Tom Scharpling’s completely unsolicited script for the sequel to Sandler’s 2013 comedy classic Grown Ups 2. The writer, comedian, and podcaster wrote the totally un-asked-for script, as Wikipedia currently notes, in “an intense six hour writing session, possibly while high on a dangerous cocktail of blue and corduroy pantsuit.”

A week after debuting the illicit script (which you can read here) in New York, Scharpling is bringing the event to (appropriately) LA’s Bootleg Theater, where he’ll be joined onstage by the likes of Andy Daly, Jake Fogelnest, Nick Thorburn, Lance Bangs, Nate Fernald, Anna Seregina, Brett Davis, and Pat Byrne, with Allison Crutchfield and Mike Krol joining to provide a live soundtrack to the event.
Tickets are on sale now for the event on Tuesday, January 28, with proceeds benefiting Australian Wildlife Relief. It sounds like a crazy risk—a gamble, even—that might just pay off.
