Milo Greene
Control
ELEKTRA
5/10
Milo Greene have altered their sound a bit, and if you were a fan of their 2012 self-titled debut, you might not be too keen on the changes. It’s not that Control is a particularly bad album. It’s simply a major 180-degree flip from what the folky collective introduced listeners to three years ago. It’s darker and heavily laden in synths, and finds the band relying far more on rhythm. In fact, they enlisted the talents of Joey Waronker (Beck, R.E.M.) for direction and support in percussion. There has never been a true “leader” of Milo Greene, but multi-instrumentalist Marlana Sheetz seems to have made her way towards center-stage for Control. Her sweet crooning carries through ninety percent of the record, but it wouldn’t be nearly as poignant without the unfaltering harmonies supplied by the remaining four members. Milo Greene definitely still know how to make a catchy record with Control, but with the band drifting away from their dreamy indie-folk twinges, it’s hard not to wonder at what cost.
