At the beginning of the year, Gorillaz launched a new project called Song Machine that was billed as less of an album than a TV series, each new track arriving in installments with a music video and a handful of guest stars. With a diverse cast of collaborators that so far includes slowthai, Slaves, and Fatoumata Diawara, today the cartoon collective is adding UK electropop songwriter Georgia and New Order’s Peter Hook to the roster.
“Aries” features these two musical personalities on drums and bass respectively, with 2-D (Damon Albarn) taking on vocals. Much like everything else the series has released thus far, the track is hard to classify, though it leans heavily on the new wave and dance influences of its guests.
The visual is a bizarre road-film narrative covering unknown territory and told mostly in inverted colors. Of the track’s title, Gorillaz guitarist Noodles shares cryptically: “Highly impatient and competitive, many Aries have the fighting spirit of your mythological ruler.”
