Two years after releasing Beyond XXXL, ambient post-punks Freak Heat Waves are returning with another head-scratcher of an album as indicated by the first single and video from Zap the Planet, slated for a September 4 release via Telephone Explosion. Doubling down on the moody electronics of XXXL, “Dripping Visions” sounds stoned beyond mobility, pairing oozing baritone vocals with a minimalist beat and what sounds like slowly wailing sirens in the background.
The video “Visions” comes packaged with similarly displays the band’s surreal side, with animators Cole Kush and Jason Harvey running with a storyboard about a knockoff Donald Duck wandering through various dimensions seeking to buy “experience.” “We wanted to work out an arrangement that would be as groovy as it was off-putting,” the band shared of the track, though the statement also applies to its visual. “Something that would slowly shift in rhythm and feel while the initial instrumentation provides a constant point of meditation.”
