UK artist James Mathé’s been churning out upbeat synth-pop releases as Barbarossa for over fifteen years now, with the proper follow-up to 2018’s Lier yet to be announced. For now, though, we’re getting a loose single that will likely reappear sometime in 2021 when the record arrives, and which follows “Make It Through” and “Always Free,” both released earlier this year. Producer by Ghost Culture, “Recliner” arrives today via Memphis Industries, with whom Barbarossa has been dropping records dating back to 2013’s Bloodlines.

“‘Recliner’ is about letting go of what you think other people expect of you,” the artist shares of his latest single, which pairs his familiar falsetto with chilled synths. “Just giving in to who you are—accepting the good, the bad. Sometimes it’s scary to show the real you, and it’s also scary if you like your life like that, as it may mean you must make some hard changes in order to live your life as your true self.”
