Just over a year ago, Pieta Brown teamed up with producer and Bon Iver drummer S. Carey for a record that echoed the intimacy of Justin Vernon’s work. Earlier this year the pair regrouped along with Ani DiFranco—whose label housed Brown’s Freeway LP—for another chapter to this collaborative story, and today the pair are following up “We Are Not Machines” with another new tune entitled “Follow You.”
More upbeat than its predecessor, the new track features lush orchestration and an electronic beat in addition to the somber piano heard on “Machines.” “Many of my last recordings have been recorded live all in one room, and this was anything but that!” Brown shares. “This track started one afternoon in Paris with my friends Bertrand Belin and Thibault Frisoni, and morphed and grew slowly with the help of my friend S. Carey. S. Carey and mixing engineer Brett Bullion were very instrumental in translating my ideas into sound—and in giving this track some wings!”
“It’s been a real joy helping Pieta stretch out her sonic palette on some of her more recent releases,” Carey adds, “and like all of her songs I’ve heard, this one had real legs to stand on and expand upon.”
Watch the appropriately black-and-white visual for the song below, and expect more music from the pair next year.
