It was a bright spot in an otherwise strange summer when Daniel Avery surprise released his melancholic LP Love + Light at the end of June, his first proper solo album in two years. In spite of the tinge of anxiety lacing the record’s fourteen ambient tracks, the jittery, bass-heavy minimal techno release felt apt for hot summer days, albeit those spent tucked away in our homes or spread out with good company in the outdoors.
Today, Avery’s following that project up with a single called “Petrol Blue,” a B-side to his “Lone Swordsman” released in September, which was inspired by the specific atmosphere he’d immersed himself in while in the recording studio. “The views across the water without a single sight on the horizon always create a certain atmosphere in my mind, some kind of unknowing warmth. Real life seems pretty distant in those moments. The track came about quickly, in the space of a few hours, and filled the room immediately.”
