2015. “Lost River” trailer

Originally titled How to Catch a Monster, Lost River—Ryan Gosling‘s first directorial effort—has just released its first trailer. While the film by the living “Hey Girl” meme and sometimes-actor was pretty much raked over the coals at last year’s Cannes Film Festival and almost went straight to DVD, there are actually some appealing qualities found in Lost River‘s trailer.

Beyond having a very talented cast that includes Christina Hendricks (Mad Men), Saoirse Ronan (The Grand Budapest Hotel), Matt Smith (Doctor Who), and Eva Mendes (The Place Beyond the Pines), the quick cuts and clips used within the coming attraction are quite aesthetically pleasing. I just wish that I knew what these clips, set to very Drive-esque music, were all about. The film’s synopsis doesn’t seem to make things any clearer: “A single mother is swept into a dark underworld, while her teenage son discovers a road that leads him to a secret underwater town.” Oh, OK…

Lost River will screen at this year’s SXSW festival, and will be in theaters and available VOD starting April 10
