Like many of his creative peers, Nativ “Luke” Top has found that penning music in quarantine has brought a sense of peace during the otherwise-anxiety-inducing pandemic. Pivoting from his already-upbeat band Fool’s Gold, his new project FANTASYDUB casts its net even wider on global music influences, reining in Malian singer/guitarist Baba Salah to help him create more ecstatic grooves with a musician whose country is enduring similar tumult alongside the pandemic.
The result of their interlingual, extremely-long-distance collaboration is “L’Heritage Universel,” a shimmering guitar-led groove that looks toward a brighter future. “This track (and project in general) is all about uplift,” Top shares. “I’ve found that spending my time getting lost in a hypnotic dance groove fantasy is life affirming and a fast ticket out of the quarantine doldrums. Working remotely with Baba was its own healing mechanism, which brought a much needed spirit of collaboration in a time when we’re all so far away from each other. And quite frankly I’m obsessed with his voice and guitar playing, so I hope others will discover his genius through this tune.”
“The song is about the legacies (cultural, civilization, social and scientific) of all mankind,” Salah counters. “There were also great people who left their mark on human history through their discovery, their struggle for democracy, and the development of peoples. I therefore invite the current generation to be more vigilant and responsible so that we can in turn bequeath a better world to future generations.”
