For Brooklyn’s Quelly Woo, the title of his forthcoming tape, Tactical Pressure, is one of several meanings for the abbreviation “TP” in his neighborhood of Canarsie. “TP means a lot of things, the easiest way to define it is staying calm,” he shared in a press release that announced the project. “When you tell a person to ‘TP’ it means to relax and think positive.”

“Relaxed” is a good way to define QW’s flow, as his deep, quiet vocals recall the gruff voice of the late Pop Smoke sans the glamor. His latest single, “Pain Into Passion,” hits just as hard as a track like “Dior,” albeit with a more subtle beat (and with homage to luxe fashion brands swapped for references to Sonic the Hedgehog and original-150 Pokémon). The video sees the rapper performing the track while decked out in turquoise duds and a car to match.
