Ben Katzman’s had his hand in some of the most unique, genre-bending music over the past decade or so, whether it be through playing in bands like Guerilla Toss and White Fang, or releasing albums by Japanther and Tall Juan via his label BUFU Records. His latest project takes the form of a new album with his DeGreaser outfit, Astrology 101, which was inspired by an astrologer who told Katzman as a kid to pursue music as a means of battling speech issues (which is incidentally nearly the exact plot of the movie Rocket Science) and features contributions from LA rock royalty including Colleen Green and members of illuminati hotties and Potty Mouth (not to mention some Miami representation courtesy of Torche’s Juan Montoya who designed the album cover).
The record is preceded by a video for the first single “Capricorn,” featuring catchy post-punk hooks, astrologically literate lyrics, and his mother doing yoga. “This song is inspired by my mother who encapsulates the Capricorn ethos like no one else,” Katzman explains. “This is a post-punk approach to the master planner Earth sign who makes a list at dawn and shreds their days conquering goal after goal. As the song’s yoga break suggests, though, even Capricorns need their breaks to recharge and refocus that energy.”
