As our acceptance that 2020 was a total wash begins to shift toward a realization that 2021 is potentially full of possibility, we’re likely on the brink of some sort of artistic renaissance fueled by a year’s worth of frustration, introspection, and artistic plotting. TWINKIDS provide just one example to back up this thesis—the queer-pop duo of Jin Fukui and Matthew Young are announcing the release of their anticipated debut LP Nobody Likes Me today, sharing the warm single “I Know” as the project’s first single. Over upbeat electronic instrumentation, Fukui’s lilting voice and longing lyrics often recall those of Perfume Genius’ Mike Hadreas.

“We imagined the song as coming to terms with the fact your relationship just isn’t working anymore,” the duo share of the single. “You’ve both grown up, and things are different. The common tragedy of being deeply incompatible with a partner you already love. In the verses it’s the things you say to your lover, and maybe to yourself too: I can change, I’ll do better, I’ll be better. And then the chorus of realizing the other shoe has already dropped, knowing it’s already over, soberly, if you really ask yourself.”
