Brent Faiyaz is an artist who works on his own schedule, dropping singles or full-lengths whenever the mood is right. Same goes for the trio he’s in with producers Dpat and Atu called Sonder. The trio have officially released a new song a couple days after they sneakily posted a 13-minute project titled “Too Late to Die Young.” It’s been two years since Sonder released “What You Heard,” and today we’re getting their latest single, which is a lovelorn collaboration with soulful singer Jorja Smith entitled “Nobody But You.”
Over minimal percussion taps and a finger-plucked guitar, Faiyaz and Smith go back and forth about an ill-fated relationship. From Smith’s perspective, she was scorned and manipulated into thinking a lover cared for her. On Faiyaz’s end, he couldn’t handle the pressure and ended up wasting the time and hurting the only person he cared about. “Swore I’d be there / Swore that I’d catch you fall / I guess I couldn’t handle it,” he sings. “Don’t think you cared about me,” Smith objects during the chorus. “Oh girl, I care about you,” Faiyaz corrects. “But you don’t care ’bout nobody.” “Nobody but you.” They pingpong back and forth skillfully trading silky vocals. It’s a devastating, subtle duet, paired with a saturated lover’s phone line–inspired lyric video.
