Grammy-nominated singer Andra Day has already been having a busy year after starring in The United States vs. Billie Holiday as the titular character, which she won a Golden Globe for and received an Oscar nod for Best Actress. It seems the legendary role, which took a toll on her both physically and mentally, isn’t the only creative project she’s been preoccupied with. Today she shared the Anderson .Paak–produced track “Phone Dies,” an ode to desire and passion cock-blocked by a cellphone.

“I’ll let you feel these vibes until my phone dies,” she sings during the first verse. “Phone Dies” is a svelte and funky number for the modern age, irritated by technological limitations. Day’s voice finds gritty pockets before swaggering into crushed velvet coos over a samba beat. Without a charger at hand, Day is willing to sacrifice her phone for an electric connection that wasn’t manufactured by Apple.

There’s talk that Day has a studio album on the way, but it’s not clear if “Phone Dies” is a one-off single or hinting at a bigger project. Listen to the track below.
