Four-piece alt-rock band SLUGS have just dropped the new visual for their latest track “I Could Do Better.” The poignant song reflects on singer Marissa Longstreet’s life, from her earliest childhood memories and her youthful carefree attitude, to the more arduous curveballs that life throws at us as we get older—in particular, battling with sobriety. The accompanying video mirrors this jovial mindset that Longstreet was dreaming of reconnecting with, showing the band dancing around at an old RV farm in the middle of the desert. Filmed on a camera found on Craigslist, and directed by India Coombs (of the band All Things Blue), the result is simple and raw, emitting a home-video style feel.

Allowing audiences to witness firsthand what a party in the desert with SLUGS entails, they invite us into their world, emphasizing how we should learn to enjoy the little things in life. From dressing up in colorful, vintage dresses, to glitter-coated tongues and finger paint—when you’re transported to the middle of the vast, open desert, it can really make you appreciate the meaning of life. Longstreet reveals, “I compared my carefree attitude as a child, finger painting an image of nothing, to the ‘I don’t care’ attitude of my twenties. I wrote this song as if it were an intervention on myself, and I was playing both sides. I wanted to find my way back to carefree innocence coming from a place of sinister repetition and complacency.”

The slow-paced song chugs along steadily, secreting groove-infused guitars. “I Could Do Better” is a laid-back tune perfect for lazy Sunday mornings. With clever lyrics that make you smile, the singer nonchalantly admits, “Wasn’t born a go-getter / Brown bag lunch white bread and cheddar / I could do better.”
