Body Breaks fall somewhere between the off-kilter proto-punk of Velvet Underground and the scrappy, bedroom-pop gold rush of late-’00s blog-rock relics feeling more indebted to a lack of proper recording equipment than a reverence to John Cale. It feels appropriate that their debut record, entitled Bad Trouble, will arrive on We Are Time Records, though the unpredictable sound they create is nowhere near the spastic, eerie din of the label’s namesake.

The first track from the record arrives today in the form of “Between the Heart and the Mind,” a warped and minimal take on garage rock that recalls the work of fellow Canadians New Fries and honorary Canucks Palberta. “I wrote that song after I caught someone cheating on me and eventually came to forgiveness,” shares vocalist Julie Reich of the track’s lyrics, which share the instrumentation’s sense of uncertainty. “When you’re trying to make sense of something hard, you’ve got your feelings and your rationale. You need to use both, and somewhere in the middle you find peace.”
