Emo rockers Gulfer and Charmer have never met in real life, but what better way to break the ice than with a split release? Following their respective 2020 albums—Gulfer’s self-titled and Charmer’s Ivy—the two groups shared a pair of singles today featuring the former’s “Look” and the latter’s “Diamond (Sprinkler).”
Both tracks feature complex, interwoven guitar riffs and lyricism that dives into uncertainty and anxiety. Toward the end of “Look” there seems to be some lush horns? Textural harmonica? I’m not sure, but the song’s distortion is elegant, then cataclysmic. Similarly, Charmer’s “Diamond (Sprinkler)” juxtaposes humor and dread with a sample from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Both tracks slap!
