Aziya‘s pop music has the force of a cyclone. The twenty-something musician’s debut EP We Speak of Tides is out tomorrow, but today we’re sharing the latest single “Marathon.” The track, which carries a massive sound with a cathartic thrill, is further evidence that Aziya is a skilled guitar hero with a brassy and formidable set of vocal chops.
She tells us, “’Marathon’ is a song about perseverance. If things aren’t going how you’d want, keep going, keep striving and progressing. I think this was a mantra in my head at a time when I felt I was at a standstill with my relationships, whether that be with loved ones, friends, or even music. I think I really needed to get out of my head with all these fears, remember my self-worth and keep moving. This song was a subconscious method of doing so.”
Its accompanying visual finds Aziya in a hurry. On a desolate road, she breaks out into a sprint. “The video for ‘Marathon’ is supposed to be quite apocalyptic,” she adds. “Throughout the video it’s quite ambiguous where I am and where I’m running to, but you can tell I’m adamant to keep going. For me, this represents the idea of perseverance. Sometimes it’s unclear where it is we’re heading and sometimes it’s extremely terrifying, but it’s important to progress and move on for our sanity and growth.”
