LISTEN: Sufjan Stevens Unveils Whispery New Single, “No Shade in the Shadow of the Cross”

Carrie & Lowell is out March 31 on Stevens’s own label, Asthmatic Kitty Records.

Presuming that we’ve got a few years before Sufjan Stevens decides to release another gigantic batch of Christmas music, it was most welcome news that the soft-spoken singer-songwriter had a new studio album on the way.

That album, Carrie & Lowell, which was announced with an album teaser last month, now has its first official single, “No Shade in the Shadow of the Cross.” The track is quintessential Sufjan, just gentle finger-plucking adorning discreetly morbid, whispery lyrics.

Now if you just can’t wait until March 31 to hear the full album, Stevens has also announced a “Headphone Listening Tour” starting this Sunday in Tokyo, in addition to the dates of a traditional, extensive tour across North America. Might be time to plan that impromptu trip to Berlin…
