Chicago’s Bnny are releasing their debut album Everything at the end of August. In preparation for that big release, the five-piece has shared the songs “Ambulance” and “Time Walk.” Today, we get the latest single, a sleepy-eyed tune called “Sure”—though “sleepy-eyed” might be a bit misleading as a description. Although the downtrodden guitars shimmer in a bit of reverb, and Jess Viscius’ vapory vocals are like wind-guided gossamers over the country-influenced track, “Sure” is resolute at its core.
Life, death, the sun, the moon—all these aspects of living on this earth are absolute, and yet they’re in constant flux and rotation. “Sure” begins as a soundtrack of avoidance (“Sure, another drink / Sure, less time to think”) and then transitions into an embrace of persistence and possibly survival. “Sure as the sunrise / Sure as the night / Sure as death, love, Sure” Viscius pauses dramatically, “as life.” She reveals, “’Sure’ is about love and it’s loss. ‘Sure’ is about apathy and denial. It’s about disillusionment in the wake of death. It’s about finding strength and meaning in the steadfastness of nature.”
The self-directed video takes some notes from David Lynch. The main protagonist ventures out to an old Western bar (everyone is wearing cowboy hats). One trip to the bathroom and let the possible dream sequence commence. It’s a romantic and melancholic visual to perfectly match the whiskey-breathed “Sure.” Check it out below.
