Brad Oberhofer hasn’t released an album since 2015’s Chronovision, but he hasn’t been sitting still. In between soundtrack gigs for film and TV and near-daily Instagram piano sessions, the artist has been in the studio aiding a laundry list of collaborators ranging from Moses Sumney to Katy Perry. Occasionally, too, we’ll get a loose studio offering from the multi-instrumentalist himself—he’s gifted us four new tracks since the world went into lockdown (including the melancholic glee of “Makeup”), with single number five arriving today.

“What Does It Mean to Me?” takes more cues from recent collaborators Sumney, Rostam, and, especially, Jonathan Rado than the other recent singles, with the familiar themes of romance and dreams taking an existential turn. “It’s a reminder that not much really matters,” Oberhofer shares of the track. “If something feels like it matters too much, you just have to ask yourself, ‘What does it really mean to me?’ That form of questioning has often enabled me to set my spirit free.”
