New York mainstays Onyx Collective have dropped a new single today titled “Tango” with co-production from Chromeo. It’s the third collaboration with the duo, hinting at a bigger project on the horizon. “A classic from the Onyx vaults. A love song that reflects the vibe of being young in New York and having relationships that don’t last forever but seem like they will in the moment,” said saxophonist Isaiah Barr.

“Tango” is built on a sashaying groove, an effervescent and polished funk. The backing vocals and swirling guitar bits give off a D’Angelo vibe. Chromeo’s Dave 1 added, “The Onyx project was the first time we produced for an outside band. And truth be told, ‘Tango’ is the song that made me want to start a label to release all this stuff. So this is a really special record for us.

“This is the first track Isaiah played me after telling me Onyx had some funk songs they wanted to work on with us. I was blown away. The maturity of the songwriting, the arrangements, the tastefulness of it all…all coming from a gang of kids in their early 20s?! I was like ‘we gotta do this.'”
