Last month, London-based singer NAO announced her new album and released the title track “And Then Life Was Beautiful.” Today she’s shared the next single, “Wait,” an affecting ballad about enduring the emotional hills of a relationship rather than running away from the overwhelming feelings. “Trying to run away is only human / But if we stay then we might make it home,” she sings during the chorus.

The stripped-down single emphasizes NAO’s formidable vocal skills. Toward the two-minute mark, she reaches a falsetto determined to give anyone a shiver. Also gorgeous is the single’s video, which features the singer on a small flower-filled island set in some black void. Outlines of bodies become distant mountains. Fragments of the self are exposed, mirroring the self-reflection NAO implores us to achieve.
