Church Girls are just over a month out from the release of their second record Still Blooms, which promises to take on heavier themes while scratching that breezy pop-punk itch the collective’s becoming known for outside of their native Philadelphia. The first single to be shared from the project hones in on certain domestic realities of home life that can be tough to navigate. “‘Separated’ is an ode to my twin brother,” vocalist Mariel Beaumont shares. “It’s about realizing home was no longer what we thought it was when a family member’s battle with alcoholism came to a head. The song is still hopeful in a way, since we knew we’d always have a home in each other. He’s still my best friend and the first person to hear every song I write.”

Contrasting with these conflicting feelings is a clean punk sound familiar to Philly peers like Thin Lips, with a jagged chorus cutting through. The video for the track, which arrives today, seemingly presents the band as a creative escape for Beaumont and bandmates as one-by-one they excuse themselves from the living room of their house to jam in a tiny yellow room. Check out the video below—and try not to wince when the Lego spaceship shatters on the floor.
